RCRA- During the Mid Twentieth-Century the United States population and industries expanded dramatically, resulting in a direct increase in the amount of waste being generated. In response to this, Congress enacted the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965 eventually amending it with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which sought to address the issues resulting from an increased volume of public and industrial waste.

RCRA Goals:

  • Protect human well-being and the environmental from possible hazards involving waste disposal.
  • Conserve energy and natural resources.
  • Take steps to reduce waste generation by reusing, recycling, and reducing waste at the source of generation.
  • Make sure waste is being managed in an environmentally responsible manner.

CERCLA-The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act was established in 1980 and is commonly referred to as Superfund. Superfund allows the Environmental Protection Agency to address discharges, or potential discharges of hazardous materials that could threaten public health, safety, or natural environment. Additionally, CERCLA enabled the Environmental Protection Agency to force businesses and individuals directly responsible for environmental contamination to remediate or compensate the Superfund for all costs resulting from the cleanup.

EPA-The federal government agency responsible for protecting human health and the environment is called the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA drafts and enforces regulations based on the laws enacted by Congress.

OSHA-In an effort to combat the threats presented to men and women within the workplace, Congress enacted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1970. OSHA’s responsibility is to make sure employers provide a safe and healthy workplace by setting and enforcing guidelines, provide routine training and education, and providing assistance when necessary.

DOT-The Department of Transportation is the agency responsible for overseeing all federal roads, air, rail, marine, and other transportation organizational tasks.
